Lynda La Plante is a Liverpudlian actress, novelist, screenwriter and television producer who specializes in crime dramas. She started with a 1983 TV miniseries which spawned two sequels before creating the now famous "Prime Suspect" - that miniseries was called "Widows", which Londoner Steve McQueen ("Shame") chose to adapt into his fourth movie, his first feature not starring frequent sneak actor Michael Fassbender. For the adaptation, he moved the action from London to Chicago, cast the women more diverse than in the 1983 version added some gangster and politics subplots, but kept the main story intact. Back then, a crime drama featuring women in the leading roles - as criminals, no less - was practically unheard of; even nowadays, this is a rare occurence, "Ocean's Eight" nonwithstanding.
