"Sing Street" is the third music-themed film by Irish writer/director John Carney, who has been making films for two decades. But he really rose to Indie fame in 2007 when he created "Once", about a chance meeting of a street musician guy and an immigrant pianist girl, both doing odd jobs for a living, but really living for music. The film won an Oscar for Best Song and spawned a musical tour of the leads - who even formed a band themselves - and a stage adaptation. In 2013, he tried to recapture the magic with "Can a Song Save Your Life?" starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, which was also well-received, though the reviews were not as enthusiastic as with "Once".
This time, he went back to Dublin, used the 1980s as a backdrop and a classic coming-of-age tale as the basis for another essay about the love of music. Here's the trailer for "Sing Street":
Was the third time a charm (again) for you? Did you like the throwback to the 1980s? And - to provide some context - did you witness the 1980s yourself, or were you born after 1977 or so? Full disclosure: I was a teenager in the mid-1980s (like Cosmo and his mates) and grew up with most of the music of the film, so I may be biased.
